“Hundreds of cash-strapped players accept a strange invitation to compete in children’s games. Inside, a tempting prize awaits with deadly high stakes: a survival game that has a whopping 45.6 billion-won prize at stake.”

“Squid Game” was a un-precedented cult success on its Netflix release in 2021 with Hwang Dong-hyuk‘s psychological mystery suspense series going on to be one of the most watched TV series of all-time. It’s something of a collage of colorful imagery, fragmented shots, quirky music, strange characters, bizarre situations, and violent, gory action – it perfectly suits the artistic style of one of my favourite alternative movie poster artists – Ise Ananphada. This limited edition, hand-numbered (#52/110) screen print for “Squid Game” is one of the best (if not the best) for the title and has been created using Thirteen (13) different coloured inks printed onto Fedrigoni Sirio Color Rough Milkshake art paper. Awarded poster of the week for 30th August 2023 by the influential and well respected alternative movie poster website Expressobeans this rolled (as issued) fine art print from 2020 is a real eye-catcher that looks and displays to excellent effect and represents an extremely hard to find, collectable item of memorabilia from a multi-international award winning Korean production.

Film Description

Squid Game Alternative Movie Poster

“A story of people who fail at life for various reasons, but suddenly receive a mysterious invitation to participate in a survival game to win more than 38 million US dollars. The game takes place on an isolated island and the participants are locked up until there is a final winner. The story incorporates popular Korean children’s games from the 1970s and 1980s, such as squid game, the literal translation of its Korean name, which is a type of tag where offense and defense use a squid-shaped board drawn in the dirt.”

“Squid Game” is a fascinating and visually stunning thriller series that left me thoroughly impressed. The show’s unique premise, coupled with its masterful execution, made it an unforgettable experience.

One of the standout elements is its visual appeal-vibrant, surreal settings juxtaposed against the grim reality of life-and-death stakes. The games themselves were meticulously designed to evoke genuine tension and unpredictability, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. The high stakes, where failure meant death, added an unparalleled intensity to every scene.

On a psychological level, “Squid Game” delves into the darkest corners of human nature. It explores themes of greed and ambition, showcasing how far individuals are willing to go-even at the expense of others’ lives-for a chance at wealth. Another compelling theme is the moral dilemmas faced when survival becomes personal; the series starkly illustrates how self-preservation can lead one to betray even their closest allies.

However, while the series excels in many areas, the ending left much to be desired. The conclusion felt open-ended and unresolved, leaving several critical questions unanswered. It’s clear the story has more to offer, and I can only hope that the next season will address these lingering threads.

Overall, “Squid Game” is a phenomenal series that masterfully combines suspense, social commentary, and visual artistry. I thoroughly enjoyed it and eagerly anticipate what comes next!

41 x 81″ printed on paper. These were printed on two or three separate sheets designed to overlap, few survive. Used for larger advertising spaces, normally posted on walls, perfect for huge movie theatres the drive-in, where people could see them from a distance. From the 1970’s on, three-sheets were sometimes printed in one piece and issued as “international” versions to be used abroad.
