“Welcome to Japan, Mr. Bond”
A series of three main general release poster designs were commissioned to promote Sean Connery’s fifth outing as 007 “You Only Live Twice” (1967) with artwork by both Robert McGinnis and Frank McCarthy used. Of the three different styles produced for the film, the “Style-B”– ‘Little Nellie’ is perhaps the most fun and action orientated with Frank McCarthy’s illustration of a ‘cool’ calm tuxedo dressed Bond (of course) piloting the ‘Little Nellie’ gyrocopter with explosions, missiles and machine-gun equipped helicopters all around him. The original 1967 Style B British UK quad movie poster offered here is presented in exceptional unrestored, folded (as issued) condition and perfectly suited to the landscape style for which it McCarthy designed it for. Colours are strong and vibrant with the white background totally unfaded and bright. With minimal handling wear (small single pinholes) this “You Only Live Twice” quad looks amazing and is a true first release measuring 30″ x 40″ (NOT one of the slightly over-sized 31″ x 41″ posters that were printed a little bit later and used largely for provincial cinemas) Hugely desirable and very collectable, it would be a worthy addition to any collection of James Bond movie memorabilia and is a truly impressive 007 poster.
Trivia: “Little Nellie” was based on the real-life Wallis Autogyro. Its inventor, Wing Commander K.H. Wallis, actually flew Little Nellie in this movie. The machine was incorporated into the plot after Production Designer Ken Adam heard Wallis in a radio interview discussing his invention. Wallis had to log eighty-five flights in total to film the sequence. It was filmed in the Japanese mountains except for one scene. The scene where the rockets were fired was filmed outside of Japan, because Japanese Law forbade the firing of rockets in the air.…more detail
