An impressive series of three posters designed by Robert Rodriguez’s own design agency; Troublemaker Studios with the photographic talents of Rico Torres on the “Planet Terror” offerings. “Planet Terror” was originally intended to be released solely as a double-bill with “Death Proof”, under the “Grindhouse” banner but after its initial double-bill release, the distributors found that some movie theaters wanted to only show the movies separately, so the two movies were given a limited separate release, and it is those posters that are offered here. These US, country of origin Advance Teaser ‘APRIL 6, 2007’ triptych posters are genuinely scarce. Originally rolled (as issued) the posters have an antiqued finish and appear to have foldlines, creases, scuffs, and tears throughout, but those ‘defects’ are actually in the printing , to make the poster appear to be from an authentic 1970’s ‘grindhouse’ movie. All three posters are in exceptional, faultless condition and present to excellent effect. Visual impact and design are key aspects of any Tarantino/Rodriguez production and this beautiful set of posters perfectly illustrates that fact and represents a marvellous opportunity to own a full set of three hugely collectable specially produced film posters.

Film Description

Death Proof  Planet Terror Movie Poster

“A double feature that’ll tear you in two !”

A double-bill of thrillers that recall both filmmakers’ (Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez) favorite exploitation films. Grindhouse (a downtown movie theater in disrepair since its glory days as a movie palace known for “grinding out” non-stop double-bill programs of B-movies) is presented as one full-length feature comprised of two individual films helmed separately by each director. Death Proof is a rip-roaring slasher flick where the killer pursues his victims with a car rather than a knife, while Planet Terror shows us a view of the world in the midst of a zombie outbreak. The films are joined together by clever faux trailers that recall the ’50s exploitation drive-in classics.

Tarantino’s contribution to the Grindhouse project is Death Proof: a weird combination of car-chase action and serial-killer terror. If nothing else, Death Proof does everything that Tarantino loves doing. It has characters who act really cool, always talking with sharp wit and dirty language. It has wild camera work, including some slick black-and-white shots and shots intentionally damaged to give everything a rough, old-fashioned texture. It has an abundance of oldies rock ‘n roll, it has oodles of references to other films (including some references to Tarantino’s own “Pulp Fiction and “Kill Bill). It even has dozens of foot-fetish shots, with barefoot characters strutting around, shoving their feet into the camera. And, of course, there’s also plenty of pulpy blood and violence to satisfy.

Planet Terror is a homage to the trash that used to play at drive-ins back in the 70s, particularly, its a zombie film. Being a lover of zombies I was stoked when I sat down to watch it. The movie delivers everything a fan of the horror-comedy-action genre could want, over the top action, over the top gore, and at times over the top acting. We follow a few main characters, all of which are enigmatic and end up having connections that no one would have seen coming, which reminded me of the low budget films that used to come out back in the day, where the director would try to weave in so many subplots the whole thing becomes silly (and a lot of fun)…The movie is heavy on gore and there’s a ton of beautiful women, therefore its a visually pleasing film to watch, especially with the premature aging effect they use to make the movie seem old…Its a really fun movie, and is the better half of Grindhouse (Death Proof seemed like a very odd chick flick). I recommend it highly to anyone who likes zombies.

Most Popular Poster Types

US Posters

LOBBY CARD
11 x 14″ printed on heavy stock paper. Used as display in theatre lobbies. Originally made in sets of eight. Some sets have a title card, which contains credits and artwork, essentially a mini-poster. The remaining seven cards are coloured photographic credits and poster artwork showing different scenes from the movie.

WINDOW CARD
14 x 22″ printed on heavy stock paper with the top 4-6 inches usually left blank for the local cinema owner to fill in the cinema and the date it was due to play. Largely discontinued during the 1970’s.

HALF SHEET
22 x 28″ printed on heavy stock paper. The image displayed is normally a smaller version of the main poster, although some do have different artworks and sometimes come in two versions.

INSERT
14 x 36″ printed on heavy stock paper. Inserts usually have the same artwork as a one sheet. Popular with collectors since they are smaller and easier to frame. Normally come tri folded or rolled.

STYLE Y/FORTY BY SIXTY
40 x 60″ printed on heavy stock paper. Rare since they were primarily used for major motion pictures only. Designed to be used outside the theatre, on an easel, normally at a drive-in movie theatre.

ONE-SHEET
27 x 41″ printed on paper. This is the most common size of poster, intended to be displayed in a glass “marquee” case. It is the most sought after size by collectors. Since the 1980’s most posters are sent to the theatre rolled and maybe slightly smaller measuring 27″ by 40″ and with the advent of backlit light boxes a growing number of modern movie posters are available double-sided and the more traditional single-sided.

THREE-SHEET
41 x 81″ printed on paper. These were printed on two or three separate sheets designed to overlap, few survive. Used for larger advertising spaces, normally posted on walls, perfect for huge movie theatres the drive-in, where people could see them from a distance. From the 1970’s on, three-sheets were sometimes printed in one piece and issued as “international” versions to be used abroad.

BRITISH Posters

BRITISH QUAD
30 x 40″ Most common poster size used in the UK. British Quads are horizontal and may have different artwork to the US one sheet. Like a US one sheet they normally come in two versions. Like a US one sheet they are usually supplied single-sided or more commonly now as a double sided poster.

BRITISH ONE-SHEET
27 X 40″, printed on paper. Very rarely used size.
