What is Giclee ?
Derived from the French term gicler – meaning ‘to squirt or spray’, the term describes a printing process whereby microscopic dots of pigment-based ink are sprayed onto archival-quality paper to ensure the fidelity of a limited edition print to an original artwork.
The richness, accuracy and depth of colour is thanks to the method’s potential to achieve a huge colour gamut (the spectrum of colours distinguishable by the human eye). Unlike the four tones used in lithography, giclées often use five: light cyan, cyan, light magenta, yellow and black.
Fantastic for reproductions which require maximum detail, giclées are most commonly found on watercolour paper or canvas, but can also be created on glass. Different types of paper will produce different effects. Matte paper works well behind glass due its lack of reflectivity, whilst the shine of a glossy finish can give an artwork a brighter appearance.

The designers of the 2019 Park Circus release Quad have cleverly incorporated the original poster design into a more ‘modern’ imagining with great success. Their poster is a spin on the Roger Kastel classic, the iconic image of the shark looming under an unsuspecting Chrissie as she swims through the water. This image fills the entire poster design, given a twist with a paint splatter style bleed at the edges that is sure to give it that extra collectable desirability. Park Circus re-releases are notoriously limited screenings making any paper from them very hard to come by and incredibly rare. Presented unrestored and in original rolled condition, this is a near perfect example for the classic Spielberg film. When it comes to amazing alternative movie posters, this limited edition art print by Laurent Durieux is a real eye-catcher and more along the lines of a travel poster as ‘Martha’s Vineyard Welcomes You’. There are a lot of alternative ‘Jaws’ posters on the market with this 2020 offering considered one of the best and most desirable with beautiful imagery. This wonderful design, featuring the second on screen victim – Alex Kitner is very clever as Alex is seen running on the Amity beach, the sea in the background and if you look closely the black Labrador Pippin about to run into the sea and meet his grisly fate. Look closer and you see an additional easter egg as one of the kites flying high above the beach resembles a black shark’s fin; a nod to Durieux’s earlier 2013 Jaws poster where the same fin is shown on a sunshade. This originally rolled, unfolded (as issued) example displays to exceptional effect. Durieux’s style is unmistakable with perfect, colours and composition. Being on almost constant release since it premiered in 1981 “Raiders of the Lost Ark” received an updated movie poster for the ‘official’ re-release in 1982. Artistic duties were again assigned to Richard Amsel who produced a more exciting, action packed offering. The overall ancient/papyrus styling remained but now Indiana Jones is featured in trademark bull-whip cracking pose offset against the Ark of the Covenant with the strong supporting cast beautifully rendered around the borders. A better image than the original ? Not really just slightly different and a perfect addition to the canon. This rare classic adventure poster from the ultimate adventure movie presents extremely well and is offered in beautiful rolled, unfolded (as issued) unrestored original condition. A truly fine piece of original country of origin movie memorabilia for a character and franchise that has proved to be one of the best loved and highly successful franchises in film history.

From first year of release in Japan, 1981 comes this marvellous B2 film poster. Fantastic detailing and spectacular bright rich colours this originally flat/unfolded example is presented in unrestored, high grade condition and is becoming extremely hard to find. A beautiful looking poster that represents a fantastic item of rare and original movie memorabilia from one of the greatest film’s ever made.

Thor is one of the key, corner stone characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and takes centre stage on this stunning multi-coloured UK quad film poster surrounded by the more than able supporting cast; Hulk, Loki and villainess Hela. Originally rolled (as issued) this looks stunning and displays to excellent and memorable effect with incredible colour tones (have I mentioned the colours before ?) One of the best looking posters to date for any of the Marvel Studios’ releases with fantastic super hero artwork that represents a fine piece of collectible modern cinema movie memorabilia. Fantastic to display as is, but if you own a lightbox this is a poster you want to put in it – super stunning when backlit.
