Hasbro’s Transformers was one of the most popular animated TV shows  and toy-lines of the 1980s. being so successful that it warranted a big screen, cinematic movie “Transformers: The Movie”. The transforming robot animated film features voices from Star Trek’s Leonard Nimoy, Orson Welles and Monty Python’s Eric Idle with colourful and exciting action-packed poster artwork promising everything that the award winning fantasy cartoon TV series offered and more. Presented conservation linen backed and displaying to fine effect this originally rolled (as issued) example is a marvellous item of 1980’s nostalgia. Totally feel good, original cinematic movie memorabilia for a franchise and toy-line that has weathered the test of time with a series of reimagined big budget CGI Michael Bay blockbusters and is just as popular today as it was when first released. “Megatron must be stopped… no matter the cost”

Trivia: In a bizarre kind of way, this could be said that the Decepticon ‘Shockwave’ appeared in two movies in 1986, the other being Aliens (1986). In the MedLab scene, just before Ripley reaches out to hug Newt after setting off the fire alarm, there is a futuristic piece of medical apparatus with three objects handing down off of it that can be briefly seen in the foreground. These objects are actually three Transformers toys, namely the Decepticon ‘Shockwave’ made by Hasbro in 1985. The toys have been spray-painted a dull silver colour and are displayed in their laser gun ‘mode’, but with each of the robot toy’s arms (i.e. the laser gun’s barrel) split apart

Film Description

Transformers: The Movie Film Poster

“The Decepticons have invaded and taken over the Autobots’ home planet, Cybertron. The Autobots are determined to fight back and go to Autobot City on Earth for supplies. Decepticons hijack and take over the ship, resulting in a fierce battle between the Autobots and Decepticons, the result of which is devastating. A new threat to the Autobots appears in the form of Unicron, a massive planet-devouring transformer.”

If the argument can be made that the original “Transformers” cartoon is about as commercialistic as they come (it surely can), then Transformers: The Movie is that notion taken to an extreme. To remedy the drop in sales of some of the action figures, Hasbro decided to just kill off those characters on the big screen and make room for new ones. That is some cutthroat boardroom strategy, right there.

In any event, we got a decent movie out of it or at least a memorable one. The voice cast is an eyebrow-raiser  – Judd Nelson (Rodimus Prime) Leonard Nimoy (Galvatron), Robert Stack (Ultra Magnus), Orson Welles (Unicorn), Eric Idle (Wreck-Gar) but there’s at least the heightened production values that are an improvement over the quality of the TV show. And I’ve grown oddly fond of the movie’s soundtrack – awful metal and all – but it’s also got one of my favourite Weird Al songs on it; That makes me smile.

Tapping into the whole childhood, nostalgia vibe  pretty well (even with the slaughter of all those non-selling characters) it’s a cool and much loved movie.

Some sets have a title card, which contains credits and artwork, essentially a mini-poster. The remaining seven cards are coloured photographic credits and poster artwork showing different scenes from the movie.

Since the 1980’s most posters are sent to the theatre rolled and maybe slightly smaller measuring 27″ by 40″ and with the advent of backlit light boxes a growing number of modern movie posters are available double-sided and the more traditional single-sided.

THREE-SHEET
41 x 81″ printed on paper. These were printed on two or three separate sheets designed to overlap, few survive. Used for larger advertising spaces, normally posted on walls, perfect for huge movie theatres the drive-in, where people could see them from a distance. From the 1970’s on, three-sheets were sometimes printed in one piece and issued as “international” versions to be used abroad.
