One of the most fun of all the famous (and infamous) Hammer productions and that’s not just because of the scantily clad prehistoric cave girls (with many on display here) but also a bright day-glo pink poster by Tom Chantrell for the 1967 release of Michael Carreras’ “Slave Girls”. Chantrell’s poster for the British marketing campaign was accompanied by an impressive front of house lobby card set of eight. The complete set (of eight cards) as offered here, contains some memorable imagery, in particular a great, shot of Martine Beswick, perfectly cast as the evil Queen Kari as she lounges on a bed animal skins. Extremely scarce as a complete set, these country of origin examples from first year of release 1967 are presented in totally original and unrestored, high grade condition. A Hammer movie that is a real personal favourite with me, with paper from it incredibly collectable.
Trivia: Shot in only four weeks using sets and costumes from One Million Years B.C. (1966), in order to offset the earlier film’s cost of £140,000 pounds.

Walt Disney’s animated take on the “Mowgli Stories” of Rudyard Kipling “The Jungle Book”. Re-released many times after its 1967 premiere this complete set of all eight (8) is from a 1980s release and contains all of the characters and memorable moments you expect to see. Stunning, vibrant colours, animated imagery includes Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera, King Louie, Shere Khan, Kaa, Colonel Hathi. Originally flat and unfolded (as issued) these front of house lobby cards present superbly and represents a fine example of rare and collectable original Disney cinematic memorabilia for a much loved classic. Undoubtedly one the best looking series of lobby cards produced for a movie that is an integral part of modern pop culture.
Trivia: The Vultures were originally going to be voiced by The Beatles. The band’s manager, Brian Epstein, approached the Disney studios about having The Beatles appear in the film, and Disney had his animators create the Vultures specifically to be voiced by the band. But when Epstein took the idea to the Beatles, John Lennon vetoed the idea, and told Epstein to tell Disney he should hire Elvis Presley instead. The look of The Vultures, with their mop-top haircuts and Liverpool voices, are a homage to The Beatles; one bird’s voice and features are clearly based on George Harrison‘s. That’s What Friends Are For was originally to be done as a rock and roll song. When the Beatles departed the project, the song was rewritten as a barbershop quartet, to make it timeless.

“Johnny’s a Dull Boy” – An early example of alternative movie poster (AMP) design and a perfect example of why this area has grown so quickly in the collectables market – it’s a an incredible image, which reminds me very much of the surrealistic poster designs that originated in Eastern Europe. David O’Daniel’s interpretation for “The Shining” art print is hand-signed and numbered #74/100 and comes from 2010 where it was used to advertise a limited screening of “The Shining” at the Castro Theatre, San Francisco. The Castro was one of the earliest exponents for showcasing AMPs, commissioning a number of ‘new’ artists to promote their upcoming screenings. A perfect example of Ise Ananphada’s distinctive style and also why I love the whole alternative movie poster movement. Each artist brings something different to a title and that is why so many titles have such an incredible inventory of beautifully designed posters. Referring to Ananphada’s own website is probably the best way to explain her style –
She is very well for the maximal illustration style, which features delicate details and expansive colour palettes. Ise’s work is well-known for her delicate illustration and a variety of forms, all of which are presented in the fullest elegance. While her aerial rendering technique and use of vibrant colours seem to showcase just the artist’s personality, if you look closely at the complex elements of her work, you’ll discover layers of symbolism that she had referred to as “visions, illusions, madness, artistry, and poetry”
Her print for Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” is the perfect example of these sentiments and is one of the most detailed and complex prints she has produced. Every iconic moment (and some not so iconic) from the movie are included. I particularly like the concept as the Overlook Hotel acts as the header (this starts the movie) and the snowbound maze (finishes the movie) is the footer. The scenes in between create the journey through the whole film. This really is a clever print that reveals new elements with each new viewing. Presented in rolled, unfolded (as issued) condition this stunning example is hand-numbered from an edition of 150 and presents to excellent effect. A rare complete set of all eight (8) full colour lobby cards from the 1999 re-release of the Fab Four’s wacky, animated classic “Yellow Submarine”. The movie was digitally restored with the sound remixed and remastered and given a very limited cinema release in 1999. All of the lobby cards feature some incredible imagery from the movie, with great use of bold design and vibrant colours with the classic Heinz Edelmann image of the titular “Yellow Submarine” as border art. The movie’s style was was a totally new direction for the animation genre & perfectly fitted the mood of the psychedelic 1960’s and The Beatles’ songs it featured. All eight (8) lobby cards are presented in excellent original condition and represents a fantastic item of Beatles cinematic memorabilia; the only problem you will have is deciding which one to display.
Trivia: The original British version was restored in 1998 for this remastered release in 1999. American audiences finally got to see five minutes of footage that had been cut from the original U.S. version, including the “Hey Bulldog” sequence.
