“The girl behind the name”
When released in July “AMY” went on to break UK box office records for a documentary in its opening weekend and has since gone on to become the highest grossing British documentary film of all time. An incredible feat for a film with a very limited release & showing in only a handful of cinemas. Made by the award winning team responsible for the excellent “Senna”, “AMY” tells the heartbreaking story of the late jazz/ blues singer Amy Winehouse. The original UK quad film poster to accompany the release was designed by the creative arts agency Territory Studio, who have produced an eye catching piece. The advertising campaign was very low key and the UK film posters that accompanied the extremely limited cinema release are truly scarce. Originally rolled this incredibly rare example displays to excellent effect and represents a fantastic collectable item of music/ film / cultural memorabilia for a true music icon.
Trivia: Amy Winehouse‘s immediate family were initially willing to work with the film’s producers and director, having heard about the success of their earlier documentary, Senna (2010). They granted the filmmakers access to hours of archive footage of Amy and her family, as well as giving the filmmakers’ their blessing to interview Amy’s family and friends. However, they – in particular, Amy’s father, Mitch Winehouse – soon began to feel they were being misrepresented in the documentary, that the negative aspects of Amy’s life were receiving much more attention than the positive, and that footage had been edited in order to produce an inaccurate narrative of Amy’s story, especially the last three years of her life. Mitch Winehouse has said that Amy’s fans should consider seeing the film for the rare, previously unseen, archive footage of his daughter, but should pay no attention to the film’s general portrayal of her, which he has labeled “preposterous”.

Although a relatively recent release any paper for Damien Chazelle’s 2016 multi award winning musical romance phenomenon “La La Land” is scarce. Taking audiences by storm at the box-office it was never expected (by the Studio) to be the huge worldwide success it turned out to be with a merchandising and marketing budget not reflected in the success. Hence the rarity of the film posters. Chazelle’s Oscar winning film was complemented with an award winning movie poster created by the creative arts agency LA. Stylish and simple the movie poster offered here is the British UK quad film poster affectionately known as the “dancing style” with both stars, Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) & Mia (Emma Stone) prominently featured and complemented by the five star glowing reviews. Originally rolled (as issued) this looks and displays to excellent effect and particularly suited to the landscape format of the UK quad. Absolutely stunning; the deep blue/purple colour range is superb and unfaded with the bright yellow of Stone’s dress shining out like a beacon. Guaranteed original this represents an extremely scarce item of modern original collectable movie memorabilia from a truly remarkable film.
Trivia: Several of Stone’s outfits are replicas of iconic dresses such as the green dress Mia wears on her first date with Sebastian which was modelled on a Judy Garland dress from the film A Star Is Born (1954). The black trousers were reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn‘s look in Funny Face (1957).

A superb pop-art style design of Twiggy draped in the British Union Jack flag, by Polish School of Posters maestro Jakub Erol features on this original Polish film poster for Ken Russell’s 1971 musical extravaganza “The Boy Friend”. Offered here is an original 1973 (first release in Poland) Polish one-sheet finished in a very striking , country unique style with this example being the first time I have offered one for sale. The Polish artists were instructed to reject Western values in their posters and were to follow rules about appropriate messaging, but other than that, they had complete artistic freedom. This resulted in some truly unique and bold designs, chock-full with individual personality, wit and subversive commentary. Heavy in metaphors and symbolism and executed in a painterly fashion with handcrafted typography the posters of the Polish School of Posters significantly influenced the international development of graphic design. Originally folded (as issued) this looks and displays very well and has benefitted greatly from being conservation linen backed; the bold colour tones are superb and unfaded and literally ‘pop’ from the paper. Guaranteed original this represents an extremely scarce and desirable item of original collectable movie memorabilia.
Trivia: Vladek Sheybal‘s character, the director De Thrill, was a parody of famed director Cecil B. DeMille, and in fact Sheybal wore a pair of the actual boots DeMille always wore.
