“They told Jack Burton to go to hell…and that’s exactly where he’s going !”
John Carpenter’s wildly entertaining cult classic “Big Trouble in Little China” receives an extraordinary alternative treatment in this highly detailed limited-edition poster by acclaimed Thai artist Ise Ananphada. Her elaborate composition places Kurt Russell’s swaggering hero Jack Burton at its centre, surrounded by an astonishing collection of characters, creatures and memorable imagery drawn from the film.
Lo Pan looms above the design alongside the fearsome Three Storms, while Gracie Law, Wang Chi, Egg Shen and other familiar figures appear among Chinatown architecture, dragons, weapons, flames and supernatural symbols. Even Jack Burton’s beloved Pork-Chop Express and truck have been incorporated into the artwork. The result perfectly captures the film’s distinctive combination of martial arts, fantasy, action, comedy and ancient Chinese mythology.
The exceptional printing is every bit as impressive as Ananphada’s illustration. Produced using 18 coloured inks, the poster is further embellished with a glitter layer and blacklight-reactive neon inks. These specialist finishes add remarkable depth, texture and vibrancy, with selected elements taking on a dramatic new appearance when viewed under ultraviolet light.
This example is hand-numbered #10 from a strictly limited edition of only 265. It has been stored flat and unfolded and remains in superb original condition. With tremendous visual impact and outstanding production quality, this is a highly desirable display piece for collectors of John Carpenter, Kurt Russell, cult cinema and contemporary alternative movie-poster art.
Trivia: John Carpenter and Kurt Russell explain on the audio commentary that the test screening was so overwhelmingly positive, that both of them expected it to be a big hit. However, 20th Century Fox put little into promoting the movie, and it ended up being a box-office bomb. In addition, the film was released in the midst of the hype for Aliens (1986), which was released sixteen days afterwards. However, it went on to be a huge cult hit through home video. Carpenter and Russell explained that the reason the studio did little to promote the film, was because they simply didn’t know how to promote it.
