Few images in science-fiction cinema are as instantly recognisable as the extraordinary ‘cracked egg’ design by Steve Frankfurt and Philip Gips of advertising agency Bemis Balkind created for Ridley Scott’s “Alien”. Set against an expanse of deep black space, its eerie green glow and the stark white title produce a beautifully restrained design filled with menace. Beneath it, the crew members appear in formation alongside the immortal tagline: “In space no one can hear you scream.”
Released in 1979, Scott’s landmark film combined science fiction and horror with unforgettable results. Sigourney Weaver stars as Ellen Ripley alongside Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton and Yaphet Kotto.
Measuring 30 × 40 inches, this highly collectable UK Quad poster is presented rolled (as issued) and remains in excellent condition, with only minimal handling and age wear. As you would expect from such a high grade example, colours are strong and unfaded. Unfolded examples are extremely rare and particularly sought after, and its minimalist composition has tremendous visual impact, making this a superb display piece for collectors of “Alien”, classic horror and science-fiction cinema.
Trivia: Director Sir Ridley Scott and writers Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett wanted H.R. Giger to design the alien creatures based on drawings from his book ‘Necronomicon’, but they had some difficulties in convincing the studio. Executives were initially appalled by Giger’s dark and disturbing imagery, but Scott’s insistence finally won them over. Even so, Giger’s designs had to be changed several times because of their blatant sexuality.
