Tea and biscuits bring a wonderfully human touch to the Gothic surroundings of Bray Studios in this original black-and-white publicity still for “Dracula” (1958), released in America as “Horror of Dracula”. Carol Marsh takes a break between scenes, sitting in her open coffin with a blanket over her legs and refreshments resting beside her. The contrast between the imposing stone tomb and this everyday ritual makes for a marvellous candid image.
Marsh played Lucy Holmwood in Terence Fisher’s celebrated Hammer production, alongside Christopher Lee as Count Dracula and Peter Cushing as Van Helsing. Here, the film’s atmosphere of supernatural menace gives way to an engaging glimpse of life between takes, offering collectors a different perspective on a classic of British horror.
Measuring 10 x 8 inches, this original US still retains its printed 1958 copyright and publicity details along the lower border. Presented flat and unfolded in excellent original condition, it is a charming and distinctive piece for collectors of Hammer horror, Carol Marsh and behind-the-scenes film photography.
Trivia: When Jonathan Harker (John Van Eyssen) meets Dracula (Sir Christopher Lee), there appears to be a statue of “Pazuzu”, the demon from The Exorcist (1973).
