Ridley Scott’s visionary science-fiction masterpiece “Blade Runner” receives a strikingly different presentation in this original Argentine cinema poster, featuring artwork created exclusively for the film’s release in Argentina. The dramatic photomontage places Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard at its centre, surrounded by Sean Young’s Rachael, Rutger Hauer’s Roy Batty, futuristic city architecture, police spinners and the blazing industrial landscape of Los Angeles in 2019.
The Spanish tagline translates approximately as: “Man has created his double… and with him, a great problem,” reflecting the film’s central questions of artificial life, identity and humanity, so prominent in the Philip K. Dick novel ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ that the movie is based on. The bold red title and densely layered imagery give this regional design a character entirely distinct from the familiar international campaign.
Professionally conservation linen-backed to stabilise and preserve the paper, the poster presents to excellent effect. With its Argentina-exclusive design, atmospheric imagery and tremendous visual impact, this scarce original example from first year of release, 1982 makes a superb display piece for collectors of “Blade Runner”, Harrison Ford, Ridley Scott and international film-poster artwork.
Trivia: This movie suffered at the box office because it opened at the same time as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). The Thing (1982) suffered a similar fate due to the same reason. Although there was praise for the visual style, word of mouth about this movie’s slow pace and bleak themes quickly caused a decrease in attendance ratings. Both movies later reached cult status and received critical praise.
