“Life, liberty and the pursuit of vengeance…The “D” is Silent. Payback Won’t Be.”

A densely layered cast portrait brings the explosive world of Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” to life in this alternative movie poster by Tyler Stout. Jamie Foxx’s Django commands the centre, surrounded by Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson, with gunfighters, horses and the burning Candyland mansion woven into the composition. Bold reds, yellow, black and grey give Stout’s intricate linework tremendous impact, beneath an oversized title that recalls classic Western advertising.

Written and directed by Tarantino, “Django Unchained” (2012) follows a freed enslaved man who joins forces with bounty hunter Dr King Schultz to rescue his wife, Broomhilda. Combining the visual language of the spaghetti Western with revenge, dark humour and memorable performances, the film provides rich material for Stout’s expansive illustrated treatment.

Dating from 2013, this alternative movie poster measures 24 x 36 inches and is hand-numbered 529/700. Presented flat and unfolded in superb condition, it is an impressive display piece for collectors of Quentin Tarantino, Tyler Stout and contemporary alternative movie artwork.

Trivia: Quentin Tarantino revealed at Comic-Con that Django (Jamie Foxx) and Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) are meant to be the great-great-great-grandparents of the character John Shaft from the Shaft (1971) films. An overt reference to this connection can be found in Washington’s character’s full name: Broomhilda Von Shaft.
