Birds engulf a woman’s face in Dan Quintana’s surreal alternative movie poster for Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds”. Overlapping wings, beaks and watchful eyes obscure her features, while a poised cigarette holder preserves an unsettling suggestion of composure. Deep pinks, muted purples and pale blue give the image a dreamlike quality, with its symbolic approach recalling the inventive traditions of Eastern European film poster design.
Released in 1963, Hitchcock’s film stars Tippi Hedren and Rod Taylor in a coastal community terrorised by unexplained bird attacks. Quintana’s interpretation captures the invasion of everyday life by something suddenly hostile, turning an elegant portrait into an image of disquiet and confusion.
Dating from 2019, this alternative movie poster is hand-numbered #24 from a print run of 250 and measures 24 x 36 inches and is presented flat and unfolded in superb condition. Its unusual palette and imaginative composition make it a distinctive display piece for collectors of Alfred Hitchcock, Dan Quintana and contemporary alternative cinema artwork.
Trivia: The scene where Melanie (Tippi Hedren) is ravaged by birds near the end of the movie took a week to shoot. The birds were attached to her clothes by long nylon threads so they could not get away.
