“In a Cornish village, various locals die from mysterious snake bites, but the coroner rules the deaths as heart attacks, until a family of newcomers starts an investigation.”

Hammer’s startling creature make-up created by Roy Ashton takes centre stage in this original US black-and-white publicity still for “The Reptile” (1966). The tightly framed portrait reveals the monster’s scaly features, bulging eyes and exposed fangs in striking detail. Against a dark background, the elaborate transformation creates an unsettling image with considerable display appeal.

Directed by John Gilling, the film follows a young couple whose arrival in a Cornish village draws them into a mystery surrounding unexplained deaths. Jacqueline Pearce stars as Anna Franklyn, whose terrible affliction lies at the heart of the story, combining a sympathetic performance with one of Hammer’s most distinctive creature designs.

Measuring 10 x 8 inches, this original 1966 still retains its printed US production and distribution details along the lower border, where the title appears as “The Reptiles”. Presented flat and unfolded in excellent original condition, it is a compelling piece for collectors of Hammer horror, Jacqueline Pearce and classic screen monsters.

Trivia: Jacqueline Pearce, who was the only Hammer actress to play two monsters (The Reptile, and a resurrected corpse in The Plague of the Zombies (1966), is best known among sci-fi fans for her role as Servalan on the British TV series, Blake’s 7 (1978).
