“This whole world’s wild at heart and weird on top.”

David Lynch‘s Wild at Heart is one rough roller coaster ride and a typical Lynch-cocktail of violence, sex and of course…bizarre characters with two of those; Lula (Lara Dern) & Sailor (Nicolas Cage) featured on the US one sheet design with artwork only used for the American release, a striking portrait style image of the stars. This is a rare original first release 1990 country of origin US one sheet movie poster for this surreal David Lynch classic. With deep black background and bold vibrant pink colour tones it looks stunning with the desirability of this scarce piece further enhanced as it is presented in unrestored, rolled condition.  An impressive and quality item movie memorabilia for a very rare and collectable film poster from one of Cinema’s most revered ‘cult’ directors.

Trivia: The distinctive snakeskin jacket Sailor wears in the film was actually Nicolas Cage‘s own. Cage asked director David Lynch if he could wear the jacket in the film, as a tribute to Marlon Brando‘s role in The Fugitive Kind (1960). After filming was completed, Cage gave his jacket to Laura Dern.

Film Description

Wild at Heart Movie Poster

“Lula’s psychopathic mother goes crazy at the thought of Lula being with Sailor, who just got free from jail. Ignoring Sailor’s probation, they set out for California. However their mother hires a killer to hunt down Sailor. Unaware of this, the two enjoy their journey and themselves being together… until they witness a young woman dying after a car accident – a bad omen.”

Recipient of the prestigious Palme d’Or award at Cannes, David Lynch‘s Wild at Heart is one rough roller coaster ride and a typical Lynch-cocktail of violence, sex and of course…bizarre characters. I challenge you to find one personality in this film that could be referred to as a ‘normal human being’. As usually, Lynch introduces a bunch of wicked individuals in his film who’re all messed up in the head pretty bad. Yet, I feel like Wild at Heart might be Lynch’s most accessible film. The structure remains chronological and quite easy to follow. Unlike the previous “Blue Velvet”, I feel like the plot and development of Wild at Heart is a bit inferior to the wonderful photography. The greatest aspects in the screenplay are in fact the delicious side-chapters that are told without absolute necessity. Like the story about Lula’s cousin Dell (Crispin Glover), the torture of Harry Dean Stanton‘s character and the nasty and disturbing images of a car accident the protagonists come across. These are the little sequences that truly prove Lynch’s talent as a storyteller. Overall and simply put: this movie is COOL! It’s a joy to watch and you really hate to love some of the offensive characters. Willem Dafoe takes the cake as Bobby Peru. His portrayal is a neat follow-up to “Blue Velvet” Frank Booth. Peru is a filthy and despicable pervert with itchy-trigger-fingers! It’s a damn shame he hasn’t got any more screen time. Wild at Heart surely isn’t the greatest masterpiece out there, but you should love it for what it is: an absurd and entertaining adventure with a couple of thought-provoking values and an extraordinary love-lesson.

Most Popular Poster Types

US Posters

LOBBY CARD
11 x 14″ printed on heavy stock paper. Used as display in theatre lobbies. Originally made in sets of eight. Some sets have a title card, which contains credits and artwork, essentially a mini-poster. The remaining seven cards are coloured photographic credits and poster artwork showing different scenes from the movie.

WINDOW CARD
14 x 22″ printed on heavy stock paper with the top 4-6 inches usually left blank for the local cinema owner to fill in the cinema and the date it was due to play. Largely discontinued during the 1970’s.

HALF SHEET
22 x 28″ printed on heavy stock paper. The image displayed is normally a smaller version of the main poster, although some do have different artworks and sometimes come in two versions.

INSERT
14 x 36″ printed on heavy stock paper. Inserts usually have the same artwork as a one sheet. Popular with collectors since they are smaller and easier to frame. Normally come tri folded or rolled.

STYLE Y/FORTY BY SIXTY
40 x 60″ printed on heavy stock paper. Rare since they were primarily used for major motion pictures only. Designed to be used outside the theatre, on an easel, normally at a drive-in movie theatre.

ONE-SHEET
27 x 41″ printed on paper. This is the most common size of poster, intended to be displayed in a glass “marquee” case. It is the most sought after size by collectors. Since the 1980’s most posters are sent to the theatre rolled and maybe slightly smaller measuring 27″ by 40″ and with the advent of backlit light boxes a growing number of modern movie posters are available double-sided and the more traditional single-sided.

THREE-SHEET
41 x 81″ printed on paper. These were printed on two or three separate sheets designed to overlap, few survive. Used for larger advertising spaces, normally posted on walls, perfect for huge movie theatres the drive-in, where people could see them from a distance. From the 1970’s on, three-sheets were sometimes printed in one piece and issued as “international” versions to be used abroad.
