The MPAA (Movie Poster Association of America) thought long and hard before finally approving this poster design for “Sin City: A Dame To Kill For” and eventually allowed it to be used once Eva Green’s silk gown was edited and made more opaque. It was previously believed to be nearly see-through, revealing a lot more of Eva (her nipples) than thought fit and proper. Designed by Rodriguez’ own Troublemaker Studios with photography by Rico Torres the implied sexual imagery imagery of Eva Green as ‘Ava’ is one of the most talked about posters of recent years and following the events surrounding its printing incredibly rare with a print run a fraction of the other character posters. This original country of origin “I’ve been especially bad” is from first year of release, 2014. Sexy, exotic, dark and moody this originally rolled (as issued) example is in exceptional unrestored original condition with artwork particularly well suited to the portrait format of the one sheet. It displays superbly and Eva looks stunning; a real talking piece that represents a truly fine piece of original ‘modern’ collectable movie memorabilia.

Trivia: The MPAA banned one of the movie’s character posters. The poster showed Eva Green as Ava Lord wearing a sheer gown through which her nipple was visible. Green told “Vanity Fair” about the controversy: “I’m not actually naked on the poster. I find it a bit odd. It seems like it’s all just publicity, a lot of noise for nothing. You have so many more violent things in the movie business, and this is kind of soft. I’m not naked. It’s suggested. I find it really sexy, actually. It’s kind of beautiful. But if it shocks people, I don’t know what to do about it. I don’t want to upset anybody. I don’t want to be seen as just the femme fatale or put into some silly box. I hope that people will have enough imagination.”

Film Description

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For Movie Poster

“Robert Rodriguez teams with Frank Miller to direct this follow-up to Sin City from a script by Miller and William Monahan based on preexisting stories along with new ones written for the big screen. Josh Brolin stars in the adaptation of the comic miniseries (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For), which tells the backstory of Clive Owen’s Dwight character as he is wrapped up in the thralls of fem-me fa-tale, Ava (Eva Green). Also new to the series is Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays Johnny, a mysterious gambler set on taking down his sworn enemy in a high-stakes game of life and death.”

Continuing with all the good stuff from the first movie, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For  uses a lot of characters and elements we already knew, we had a conclusion for the tormented tale of Nancy Callahan portrayed by Jessica Alba and John Hartigan (now a ghost), performed by Bruce Willis  which was a very logical conclusion to their story. But along all the good elements in the film, foremost I think that Eva Green‘s AVA gives us an interesting turn to the plot; unlike her comic book counterpart, this AVA never really seems a defenseless damsel in distress which means that most men falling for her can’t be really considered victims, as they fell actually wanting to fall; they could have believed anything she said or even still make her will in the case they didn’t. That makes her character a bit more powerful and some of the other characters, much less innocent.

LOBBY CARD
11 x 14″ printed on heavy stock paper. Used as display in theatre lobbies. Originally made in sets of eight. Some sets have a title card, which contains credits and artwork, essentially a mini-poster. The remaining seven cards are coloured photographic credits and poster artwork showing different scenes from the movie.

WINDOW CARD

HALF SHEET
22 x 28″ printed on heavy stock paper. The image displayed is normally a smaller version of the main poster, although some do have different artworks and sometimes come in two versions.

INSERT
14 x 36″ printed on heavy stock paper. Inserts usually have the same artwork as a one sheet. Popular with collectors since they are smaller and easier to frame. Normally come tri folded or rolled.

STYLE Y/FORTY BY SIXTY
40 x 60″ printed on heavy stock paper. Rare since they were primarily used for major motion pictures only. Designed to be used outside the theatre, on an easel, normally at a drive-in movie theatre.

ONE-SHEET
27 x 41″ printed on paper. This is the most common size of poster, intended to be displayed in a glass “marquee” case. It is the most sought after size by collectors. Since the 1980’s most posters are sent to the theatre rolled and maybe slightly smaller measuring 27″ by 40″ and with the advent of backlit light boxes a growing number of modern movie posters are available double-sided and the more traditional single-sided.

THREE-SHEET
41 x 81″ printed on paper. These were printed on two or three separate sheets designed to overlap, few survive. Used for larger advertising spaces, normally posted on walls, perfect for huge movie theatres the drive-in, where people could see them from a distance. From the 1970’s on, three-sheets were sometimes printed in one piece and issued as “international” versions to be used abroad.
