One of Sylvester Stallone’s best film poster images this is a classic Rocky pose. Relatively simple design the emphasis (as it should be) is all on the main character with the strong supporting cast featured in a photo montage running along the bottom; the design means you never forget who this film is about and that’s ROCKY. The original UK quad movie poster for “Rocky III” is from first year of release 1982 and is presented in excellent folded (as issued) condition. It displays beautifully. The images and colours are sharp and the dark background, deep and unfaded black. As a predominantly dark poster this rarely tuns up in such superb invest grade condition as this example. A fine piece of original and collectable movie memorabilia for one of the screens biggest stars playing one of his greatest and most recognisable signature characters.

Film Description

Rocky III Movie Poster

“His life is happy, his fights have seemed easy. Now a young upstart is going to make him prove just how far he can still go…”

Rocky III is without a doubt the best film in the series. Rocky I and Rocky II are tremendous films that focus more on Rocky and Adrian’s love for one another and their journey from unhappiness to complete fulfillment. Rocky IV while visually stunning, is verging on sci fi it is so unrealistic  and Rocky V makes the whole journey seem almost worthless. But the third film in my opinion has the perfect blend. From the supercharged “Eye of the Tiger” opening to the classic Rocky v Apollo ending, this film just does not let up. All of the cast act their socks off here, none more so than Sylvester Stallone himself. The scene of Mickey’s death after Rocky’s destruction at the hands of Clubber Lang is brilliant- you can feel the genuine emotion Stallone has for Mickey’s character and the chemistry between Burgess Meredith and Stallone is there up to the very last scene they had together. But the Masterstroke here lies in making Apollo a far more central character after Mickey’s death. Carl Weathers pulls of a huge feat in this film in that he fills Meredith’s shoes so to speak- not an easy job when you consider just how important Mickey is to the Rocky films. WOW, all of this and I still haven’t even mentioned CLUBBER! Clubber Lang (Mr. T) is a great adversary for Rocky and the power and intensity his character displays in the ring is ferocious. The second fight between Rocky and Clubber is just breathtaking, the pace of the fight is electric, some of the camera work makes you feel like you are literally in the ring with these two warriors. And more importantly here we see Balboa at his absolute peak- technically and physically, he actually looks and fights like a man who is the BEST fighter in the world. Rocky evolves in this film into a boxer with speed, skill, intelligence and power. A triumph of a movie that I would recommend to anyone with the slightest interest in being entertained.

US Posters

LOBBY CARD
11 x 14″ printed on heavy stock paper. Used as display in theatre lobbies. Originally made in sets of eight. Some sets have a title card, which contains credits and artwork, essentially a mini-poster. The remaining seven cards are coloured photographic credits and poster artwork showing different scenes from the movie.

WINDOW CARD
14 x 22″ printed on heavy stock paper with the top 4-6 inches usually left blank for the local cinema owner to fill in the cinema and the date it was due to play. Largely discontinued during the 1970’s.

HALF SHEET
22 x 28″ printed on heavy stock paper. The image displayed is normally a smaller version of the main poster, although some do have different artworks and sometimes come in two versions.

INSERT
14 x 36″ printed on heavy stock paper. Inserts usually have the same artwork as a one sheet. Popular with collectors since they are smaller and easier to frame. Normally come tri folded or rolled.

STYLE Y/FORTY BY SIXTY

Since the 1980’s most posters are sent to the theatre rolled and maybe slightly smaller measuring 27″ by 40″ and with the advent of backlit light boxes a growing number of modern movie posters are available double-sided and the more traditional single-sided.

THREE-SHEET
41 x 81″ printed on paper. These were printed on two or three separate sheets designed to overlap, few survive. Used for larger advertising spaces, normally posted on walls, perfect for huge movie theatres the drive-in, where people could see them from a distance. From the 1970’s on, three-sheets were sometimes printed in one piece and issued as “international” versions to be used abroad.
