“She murders. So she can live…”

Beautiful close up of ‘NIKITA’ (Anne Parillaud) in her little black dress, crouched in a hotel kitchen, smoking hand-gun swaying in her delicate little hands, not entirely sure what she’s doing, bathed in an almost other worldly ‘blue’ haze…equates to an incredibly stylish and memorable movie poster. But then again the film’s creator, Luc Besson is perhaps the most stylish auteur of his generation and it is  this 1990 action thriller that remains one his most celebrated movies. Showing in only a handful of ‘art-house’ cinemas the advertising campaign was very low key and any British film posters that accompanied the extremely limited cinema release are truly scarce. Created by the award winning creative agency IDEST using a photograph of femme fatale ‘Nikita’ (Anne Parillaud) by Lisa Powers the British UK Double Crown style being one of the most coveted making this original 1990 film poster for “NIKITA” highly sought after. Originally rolled (as issued) it presents in excellent original unrestored condition. A very hard to find poster in any condition which makes this high grade rolled investment condition piece a real talking piece. Hugely collectable & desirable original film memorabilia from a truly stylish cult classic movie of the 90’s.

Film Description

NIKITA Movie Poster

“Nikita is a young lady who with three Nihilist friends commit robbery and murder while on drugs. After her trial she is not executed or taken to prison, but to a school for special operatives. She is told that Nikita no longer exists and she will be trained to pay back society for what she has done, as a spy/assassin. She is trained for over two years and with no warning is handed a gun in a restaurant and told to kill the man at the next table as her handler leaves.”

Forget the T.V. series. Forget the Hollywood remake ‘The Assassin’. Remember Luc Besson’s NIKITA (‘La Femme Nikita’).

This has got to be one of the most stylish, moody and gripping films in existence. Luc Besson‘s direction is refreshing whilst the cinematography is simply stunning, particuarly the scene in the hotel where Nikita gets her first assignment. The soundtrack by Éric Serra is simply genius and actually adds something to the film…soundtracks usually seem to be an afterthought but refreshingly; not in this case.

The beautiful Anne Parillaud is perfect in the lead role (unlike Bridget Fonda) and the subtle romance between her and Tchéky Karyo is pure eloquence. The hugely talented Jean-Hugues Anglade shines in this film but of all the male roles, Jean Reno (also fabulous in Luc Besson’s Leon)is outstanding as the completely unbalanced Victor The Cleaner. Jeanne Moreau as Amande makes a notable appearence following years of contributions in countless films. Besson established himself as one of the leading innovative directors with this film and you can easily see why.

Most Popular Poster Types

US Posters

LOBBY CARD
11 x 14″ printed on heavy stock paper. Used as display in theatre lobbies. Originally made in sets of eight. Some sets have a title card, which contains credits and artwork, essentially a mini-poster. The remaining seven cards are coloured photographic credits and poster artwork showing different scenes from the movie.

WINDOW CARD
14 x 22″ printed on heavy stock paper with the top 4-6 inches usually left blank for the local cinema owner to fill in the cinema and the date it was due to play. Largely discontinued during the 1970’s.

HALF SHEET
22 x 28″ printed on heavy stock paper. The image displayed is normally a smaller version of the main poster, although some do have different artworks and sometimes come in two versions.

INSERT
14 x 36″ printed on heavy stock paper. Inserts usually have the same artwork as a one sheet. Popular with collectors since they are smaller and easier to frame. Normally come tri folded or rolled.

STYLE Y/FORTY BY SIXTY
40 x 60″ printed on heavy stock paper. Rare since they were primarily used for major motion pictures only. Designed to be used outside the theatre, on an easel, normally at a drive-in movie theatre.

ONE-SHEET
27 x 41″ printed on paper. This is the most common size of poster, intended to be displayed in a glass “marquee” case. It is the most sought after size by collectors. Since the 1980’s most posters are sent to the theatre rolled and maybe slightly smaller measuring 27″ by 40″ and with the advent of backlit light boxes a growing number of modern movie posters are available double-sided and the more traditional single-sided.

THREE-SHEET
41 x 81″ printed on paper. These were printed on two or three separate sheets designed to overlap, few survive. Used for larger advertising spaces, normally posted on walls, perfect for huge movie theatres the drive-in, where people could see them from a distance. From the 1970’s on, three-sheets were sometimes printed in one piece and issued as “international” versions to be used abroad.

BRITISH QUAD
30 x 40″ Most common poster size used in the UK. British Quads are horizontal and may have different artwork to the US one sheet. Like a US one sheet they normally come in two versions. Like a US one sheet they are usually supplied single-sided or more commonly now as a double sided poster.
