After an extremely successful advertising campaign on “SKYFALL”, Empire Design have been retained by EON for the latest Bond extravaganza “SPECTRE” & it’s fair to say they have come up trumps again. This original “Coming Soon” Advance US one sheet for Sam Mendes’ second Bond film has a real retro feel about it; printed in a black & white style (if you look closely the only colour is a hint of steely blue in Craig’s eyes) exuding a strong “Live and Let Die” / Roger Moore vibe as Daniel Craig mimics Moore’s stance and rocks the dark turtleneck sweater look with shoulder holster accessory. These “Coming Soon” advance posters are always sought after and often give an indication of the coming film’s tone, and it’s fair to say this instalment upped the quips quota. Originally rolled (as issued) this lightly used example displays and presents to excellent effect. Guaranteed original this represents an extremely collectable piece of James Bond cinematic movie memorabilia.

Trivia: Dave Bautista is the fourth actor with a professional wrestling background to play a James Bond villain, following in the footsteps of Harold Sakata (Goldfinger (1964)), Peter Fanene Maivia (You Only Live Twice (1967), and Pat Roach (Never Say Never Again (1983).

Film Description

James Bond SPECTRE Movie Poster

“A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond (Daniel Craig) on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica Belluci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as S.P.E.C.T.R.E. Meanwhile, back in London, Max Denbigh (Andrew Scott), the new head of the Centre of National Security, questions Bond’s actions and challenges the relevance of MI6, led by M (Ralph Fiennes). Bond covertly enlists Miss Eve Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) and Q (Ben Whishaw) to help him seek out Dr. Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), the daughter of his old nemesis Mr. White (Jesper Christensen), who may hold the clue to untangling the web of S.P.E.C.T.R.E. As the daughter of the assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot. As Bond ventures towards the heart of S.P.E.C.T.R.E., he learns a chilling connection between him and the enemy he seeks.”

Finally, with SPECTRE we get to have some fun in the Daniel Craig James Bond era. Skyfall was good but a little bit underwhelming. This brings back the punches of classic Bond and has outstanding performances from Craig, Léa Seydoux, and Christoph Waltz. Not to mention Naomie Harris (who is becoming crucial and wonderful in her character development), Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, and Rory Kinnear. Monica Bellucci and Dave Bautista (woefully underused as a villain) serve their roles very well. Waltz was the funnest to watch and I always pegged him for this role of Bond villain since I first saw Inglourious Basterds and boy, he did not disappoint. He eats up his scenes and eschews the sadistic egomaniac with charm, style, and class. The scenery and shooting were breathtaking especially the shots in the Austrian Alps and the Train sequence was a great nod to the ghosts of Bond’s past (From Russia with Love and The Spy Who Loved Me).

Most Popular Poster Types

US Posters

LOBBY CARD
11 x 14″ printed on heavy stock paper. Used as display in theatre lobbies. Originally made in sets of eight. Some sets have a title card, which contains credits and artwork, essentially a mini-poster. The remaining seven cards are coloured photographic credits and poster artwork showing different scenes from the movie.

WINDOW CARD
14 x 22″ printed on heavy stock paper with the top 4-6 inches usually left blank for the local cinema owner to fill in the cinema and the date it was due to play. Largely discontinued during the 1970’s.

HALF SHEET
22 x 28″ printed on heavy stock paper. The image displayed is normally a smaller version of the main poster, although some do have different artworks and sometimes come in two versions.

INSERT
14 x 36″ printed on heavy stock paper. Inserts usually have the same artwork as a one sheet. Popular with collectors since they are smaller and easier to frame. Normally come tri folded or rolled.

STYLE Y/FORTY BY SIXTY
40 x 60″ printed on heavy stock paper. Rare since they were primarily used for major motion pictures only. Designed to be used outside the theatre, on an easel, normally at a drive-in movie theatre.

ONE-SHEET
27 x 41″ printed on paper. This is the most common size of poster, intended to be displayed in a glass “marquee” case. It is the most sought after size by collectors. Since the 1980’s most posters are sent to the theatre rolled and maybe slightly smaller measuring 27″ by 40″ and with the advent of backlit light boxes a growing number of modern movie posters are available double-sided and the more traditional single-sided.

THREE-SHEET
41 x 81″ printed on paper. These were printed on two or three separate sheets designed to overlap, few survive. Used for larger advertising spaces, normally posted on walls, perfect for huge movie theatres the drive-in, where people could see them from a distance. From the 1970’s on, three-sheets were sometimes printed in one piece and issued as “international” versions to be used abroad.

BRITISH Posters

BRITISH QUAD
30 x 40″ Most common poster size used in the UK. British Quads are horizontal and may have different artwork to the US one sheet. Like a US one sheet they normally come in two versions. Like a US one sheet they are usually supplied single-sided or more commonly now as a double sided poster.

BRITISH ONE-SHEET
27 X 40″, printed on paper. Very rarely used size.
