“You’re a big man, but you’re in bad shape. With me it’s a full time job. Now behave yourself”

A REAL FIND & ONE THE TRULY GREAT BRITISH FILM POSTERS. An original 1971 UK quad for Mike Hodges’ iconic British gangster film “Get Carter”. The raw grittiness of Arnaldo’s Putzu’s artwork, the implied threat of the double barrelled shotgun, the unbridled violence of the fight scene and the uniformed policemen leave us in no doubt that Michael Caine in “Get Carter” is involved in a serious crime thriller and then of course there’s the ‘flower power’  psychedelic jacket which acts as a nod to firmly state that the ‘peace & love’ of the previous decade has been discarded for a much more realistic vision of the now 70’s Britain. Being originally folded (as issued) this full bleed, totally unrestored example displays and presents to excellent effect in true investment grade condition with only very minimal handling and age wear. It is easily the best example of this scarce poster I have ever had the pleasure to offer for sale. A highly prized and collectible film poster that proved to be a defining role for Michael Caine…As stylish and cool a poster as they come and a fantastic piece of original film movie memorabilia…“Frank wasn’t like that. I’m the villain in the family, remember?”

Film Description

Get Carter Movie Poster

“A vicious London gangster, Jack Carter, travels to Newcastle for his brother’s funeral. He begins to suspect that his brother’s death was not an accident and sets out to follow a complex trail of lies, deceit, cover-ups and backhanders through Newcastle’s underworld, leading, he hopes, to the man who ordered his brother killed. Because of his ruthlessness, Carter exhibits all the unstopability of the android in Terminator, or Walker in Point Blank, and he and the other characters in the film are prone to sudden, brutal acts of violence.”

If Shakespeare could have written a gangster movie, “Get Carter” would surely be the one. Jack Carter is the 1970s embodiment of classical tragic heroes like Hamlet or Macbeth. Also, in the finest Shakespearian tradition, as the film reaches its climax, the bodies begin to mount with alarming rapidity…The film is initially a slow-burner, but what is arguably a career-best performance from Michael Caine sustains interest until the plot begins, in every sense, to kick in. And when it does, there’s no stopping it, as Carter ruthlessly, and recklessly, sets about dealing with his enemies…The industrial city of Newcastle is depicted as gritty, seedy and unapologetically working class. The grainy camerawork gives the impression that this is a real-life documentary rather than a gangster flick…Probably every British gangster movie since has used “Get Carter” as a benchmark, particularly “The Long Good Friday”, or even the more recent “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”. Any why shouldn’t they? For the ultimate British gangster icon, you need look no further than Jack Carter and his silver Ford Cortina…A truly genuine classic film poster.

The remaining seven cards are coloured photographic credits and poster artwork showing different scenes from the movie.

HALF SHEET
22 x 28″ printed on heavy stock paper. The image displayed is normally a smaller version of the main poster, although some do have different artworks and sometimes come in two versions.

INSERT

THREE-SHEET
41 x 81″ printed on paper. These were printed on two or three separate sheets designed to overlap, few survive. Used for larger advertising spaces, normally posted on walls, perfect for huge movie theatres the drive-in, where people could see them from a distance. From the 1970’s on, three-sheets were sometimes printed in one piece and issued as “international” versions to be used abroad.
