1987 was the end of a historic movie tradition as Brian Bysouth produced the last artist drawn painted James Bond film poster (Fascinating Brian Bysouth interview with Eddie Shannon of Film on Paper) for Timothy Dalton’s 007 debut as “The most dangerous Bond…Ever” in “The Living Daylights”. It’s a hard act to follow but artist Mark Murphy certainly comes very, very close with this stunning alternative movie poster from 2023. The action-packed artwork features all the classic imagery you’d expect to see in a Bond film, 007 dressed in a tuxedo, exotic location, gadgets, a beautiful, glamorous woman – Maryam D’Arbo and a life threatening scenario. The colours are truly amazing, super strong and vibrant. This limited edition fine art print represents an impressive piece of very collectable James Bond movie memorabilia that would be a worthy addition to any collection of cinematic movie memorabilia.

It also happens to be one of the best and most memorable movie poster images ever ! So why reinvent it ? When it comes to amazing alternative movie posters, this hand-numbered (#242/250) limited edition art print by Andrew Swainson is a real eye-catcher. There are a lot of alternative ‘Jaws’ posters on the market with this 2021 offering considered one of the best and most desirable; very clever imagery and a title that is finished in blood red (of course) enhanced by a spot varnish finish. Released by Vice Press, this wonderfully subtle design by Swainson is a God’s eye view of Amity Island’s beach moments before the shark takes young Alex Kintner as its second victim. We can just make out the image of a shark in the water with its teeth being integrated into the waves as they break onto the shore. A very limited release. “Jaws” is probably the most important film of ‘modern’ cinema, launching a movie trend that is now commonly referred to as the ‘Summer Blockbuster’. It also happens to have some of the most incredible and memorable series of scenes of any movie. These scenes are largely mapped out beforehand using illustrated storyboards. For “Jaws” the storyboards were created by the multi award winner production designer – Joe Alves. The storyboard offered here is an exact replica of the one used in production featuring a scene from the climax of the film as the great white launches itself at the stern of the boat. Printed on off-white colour cardstock paper, Alves himself has added a coloured, hand-drawn shark illustration, hand-lettered “JAWS” and has personally-signed it with shark Remarque added to his signature. Each of these are unique with none of Alves’ personal annotations and illustrations the same. Originally rolled, flat and unfolded (as issued) this example displays to exceptional effect. Roger Kastel’s original design of the huge Great White Shark about to break the waterline and devour the naked female swimmer has been adapted. The top half of the poster includes incredible lifelike illustrations of the key actor’s Quint (Robert Shaw), Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) and Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), with some action thrown for good measure as the shark attacks Hooper in the underwater cage. What is Giclee ?
Derived from the French term gicler – meaning ‘to squirt or spray’, the term describes a printing process whereby microscopic dots of pigment-based ink are sprayed onto archival-quality paper to ensure the fidelity of a limited edition print to an original artwork.
The richness, accuracy and depth of colour is thanks to the method’s potential to achieve a huge colour gamut (the spectrum of colours distinguishable by the human eye). Unlike the four tones used in lithography, giclées often use five: light cyan, cyan, light magenta, yellow and black.
Fantastic for reproductions which require maximum detail, giclées are most commonly found on watercolour paper or canvas, but can also be created on glass. Different types of paper will produce different effects. Matte paper works well behind glass due its lack of reflectivity, whilst the shine of a glossy finish can give an artwork a brighter appearance.

An outstanding alternative movie poster by the maestro of British horror art, Graham Humphreys for John Carpenter’s horror, sci-fi classic “The Thing”. This superb limited edition example is incredibly rare in any edition and to offer an Artist Proof example (this is hand-numbered #10/10) is indeed a bonus. Antarctic Alien terror never looked better than this, thanks to Humphreys’ stunning imagery, MacReady (Kurt Russell) and the Thing illustrations are perfectly realised, with beautiful colour tones. Released in 2023 as an exclusive Private Commission, this immediately sold out when launched. Trivia: Unused music composed for this film was later used by Ennio Morricone in Quentin Tarantino‘s The Hateful Eight (2015). Ironically, Morricone’s Thing score was nominated for a Razzie for worst score, while his score for Hateful Eight won him an Oscar.

A beautiful alternative movie poster by Hero Complex Gallery SIGNED BY SIX OF THE CAST and featuring the incredible horror artwork of Vance Kelly for one of the best vampire films ever made…Joel Schumacher’s “The Lost Boys”. This 2018 hand-numbered (#61/325) limited edition release is a proper horror poster as leader of The Lost Boys – David (Kiefer Sutherland) is the main focus with his vampire family and would be vampire hunters blended into the background and printed using an incredible colour palette of blood reds inks. For a nice finishing flourish, Kelly has cleverly framed his subjects in a V (for vampire) design. Presented in excellent condition this rolled (as issued) example displays superbly and has been signed by six of the cast, who in addition to their name have added their character or a quote; Kiefer Sutherland – David, Jason Patric – Michael, Alex Winter – Marko, Billy Wirth – Dwayne, Tim Cappello (saxophone player) – I still believe is and G Tom Mac – Cry Little Sister. An impressive piece of horror poster artwork and is a hugely desirable alternative movie poster that with the addition of the signatures makes for an incredible piece of memorabilia. This is THE teenage angst vampire movie with this high grade poster showcasing the teen vampires in all their undead glory…“Something I never could stomach about Santa Carla, all the damn vampires!”

“Let the festivities begin”
Titled “The May Queen” this impressive giclee art print inspired by Ari Aster’s cult classic horror film “MidSommar” features the beautiful and intricate artwork of Ukrainian artist Ann Bembi, who’s photo-realistic style perfectly suits the content. With shades of “Wicker Man” the bright colours and sea of flowers can’t hide the anguish and fear of lead actress Florence Pugh (Dani). A lovely alternative movie poster for this slow-burn pagan horror that has a rapidly growing cult following. Available for a strictly limited one-hour time window on April 5th 2022 when 580 were ordered, with the poster here being hand-numbered #222. Originally rolled (as issued) it presents and displays to excellent effect and represents an outstanding piece of horror genre movie memorabilia.
Trivia: The practice of ättestupa is effectively a myth. As depicted in the movie, the elderly were expected to sacrifice for the good of the village, maintaining efficiency.

“If it doesn’t scare you, you’re already dead!”
In 1968 George A. Romero released the zombie classic “Night of the Living Dead”. The one-sheet poster that accompanied the release is a true icon of poster design using zombie footage from the movie and printed using black, white and lurid green imagery. The original poster has been reworked and sharpened up in 2024 by Bottlneck Gallery and ISH with colour separations by a true master of his craft – Jason Edmiston, who used the all red style, replicating the look of the 10th Anniversary (1978) one-sheet design. The studio had this to say on the release “George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead helped create the walking dead genre of film, and the original one-sheet movie poster is as bold and iconic now as it was in the late ‘60s. We worked with ISH and artist extraordinaire Jason Edmiston to revive the original one-sheet theatrical poster art in order to create an officially licensed, and horrifyingly awesome, screen print edition! The poster features bold design aesthetics with the title and credit work, all dutifully reanimated by Jason’s deft hand.” Presented in excellent unrestored, originally rolled (as issued) condition this variant edition is hand-numbered #6/100 and comes printed in a deep blood red colour tone. A highly desirable example of cinema memorabilia from perhaps the most influential horror film of the modern era.
