“Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown.”
Roman Polanski’s “Chinatown” is one of cinemas finest detective movies accompanied by an incredible marketing campaign headed by Jim Pearsall in 1974. This multi-award winning film has been complemented by a series of alternative movie posters over the years with this most recent commission by Laurent Durieux is the best and destined as a future classic. Much like a fine wine Durieux’s art prints age very well, getting better and better with each viewing. and he has produced an outstanding addition to the title, truly eye-catching and super stylish. The deep, rich colours are predominantly blues and purples with ‘Chinatown’ printed in contrasting bright pink ink. Originally rolled (as issued) this signed and hand-numbered offering (#175/500) looks and displays to excellent effect with very minimal handling wear. An extremely scarce, selling out in near record time modern art print, collectable item of movie memorabilia from a true Hollywood classic.
Trivia: There is a rumour that this was the first part of a planned trilogy written by Robert Towne about J.J. “Jake” Gittes and Los Angeles. The second part, The Two Jakes (1990), was directed by Jack Nicholson. The supposed third part never existed, as later confirmed by the writer; however, certain elements and details of the story (a corrupt company called Cloverleaf tries to buy up all public transportation in order to replace it with freeways) would later end up in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), which was a film-noir spoof/homage of Chinatown.
The interesting thing about the trilogy concept is that they focused on the three things that were instrumental in making Los Angeles grow the way that it did, which is via the control of water, real estate, and transportation.

Fantastic pop art design and use of bold colours which literally do ‘pop’ out from from the paper of this original 1969 Japanese B2 film poster. Subtle imagery of lead character Wyatt (Peter Fonda), almost hidden in the overall design. “Hired killers by day. Devoted lovers by night. Until they found their next assignment was each other”…Beautiful rolled UK Quad film poster for John Huston’s 1985 romantic gangster based black comedy “Prizzi’s Honour” starring Jack Nicholson & Kathleen Turner as the loved up mob assassins. You would be hard pushed to find a nicer example of this (if you could find one at all). Originally rolled with great artwork and deep unfaded colours this displays superbly, looking absolutely fantastic in this landscape format presented here in investment grade condition.

A beautiful, complete set of all nine US front of house lobby cards from first year of release, 1980 including the impressive Saul Bass designed title card for Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece of modern horror “The Shining”. These full-colour, full bleed (the imagery runs right to the edge with no border) cards comprise a series of incredible character and key scene imagery, that includes two from the iconic ‘Here’s Johnny’ moment with six in total to feature ‘mad’ Jack Nicholson. A rare find as a complete set as most were broken up and the cards sold individually. Totally original and unrestored, the cards are presented in high grade excellent flat, unfolded (as issued) condition that display and present to excellent effect. A genuinely scarce and hard to find example of horror film cinema memorabilia for one of the most important and influential horror films ever made.“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy…”
Trivia #1: According to Shelley Duvall, the famous “Here’s Johnny !” scene took three days to film and the use of sixty doors.
Trivia #2: For the “Here’s Johnny” scene in which Jack breaks down the bathroom door, the props department built a door that could be easily broken. However, Jack Nicholson had worked as a volunteer fire marshal and tore it apart far too easily. The props department were then forced to build a stronger door.

“Your Senses Will Never Be The Same”
Of the four poster designs created for the 1975 release of Ken Russell’s “Tommy” in Japan this style B is by far the rarest and visually the best. Featuring country unique Japanese artwork the “Christ like” imagery of Tommy (Roger Daltrey) his head adorned with a crown of poppies and bleeding torso pinned by poppies is a memorable sight. Complemented by border artwork of the all-star cast (The Who, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, Jack Nicholson, Oliver Reed to name just a few.) stands out as a great looking poster. Originally rolled (as issued) this rare example presents very well and as it features some of the greatest names ever in both rock music and the cinema represents a fantastic piece of highly desirable, collectable entertainment memorabilia.
