Comments: Director Nicolas Roeg pulled a masterstroke when casting new wave rock legend David Bowie in the role of Thomas Jerome Newton the displaced alien explorer. This is one of those rare roles when an actor doesn't have to act just be himself. At the time (mid 70's) you could quite easily believe that Bowie was an alien.
